Optical bonding is a critical process for enhancing LCD displays by attaching a touchscreen or protective glass directly to the panel. This technique fills the gap between layers with an optically transparent material, eliminating internal reflections, boosting brightness and contrast, and improving overall durability.

At Macnica, we provide three advanced optical bonding methods to suit various applications:

OCR (Optically Clear Resin - Wet Bonding): The most durable option, OCR excels at withstanding impacts, shocks, and vibrations. It’s ideal for outdoor applications, offering superior readability even in direct sunlight by eliminating internal reflections. The flexibility of OCR allows up to 2mm of resin, accommodating any irregularities in the display or housing. This process is suitable for a wide range of display sizes, from 1.33” up to 100.0” diagonals.

OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive - Dry Bonding): A faster and more cost-effective alternative, OCA bonding provides solid durability and good readability. It’s ideal for projects requiring efficient production times without compromising on quality, and supports displays from 1.33” to 65.0” diagonals.

Air Gap Bonding: The most economical option, Air Gap bonding uses double-sided tape to attach the cover glass. While less resistant to impact and shock, it’s a great choice for indoor applications where durability is less critical. This method can be applied to any size LCD display.

Add Touch Capacity to any Display up to 100"

Macnica offers a wide selection of LCD modules with built-in touch functionality, but for most projects, we bond a touch film or panel to your LCD display, typically adding a protective cover glass.

This process allows us to deliver a cost-effective, custom touch display tailored to your needs, with screen sizes ranging from 1.33” to 100” diagonals. We specialize in multiple touch technologies, each suited for specific applications:

Projected Capacitive Touch (PCAP)

PCAP technology uses a conductive grid that detects changes in the electromagnetic field caused by touch, even without direct contact.

This method offers high sensitivity, excellent image clarity, and multi-touch support, making it ideal for smartphones and high-end displays.

However, PCAP requires optical bonding with a cover glass and is susceptible to EMI/RFI interference.

Surface Capacitive Touch

This more economical option features a glass overlay with a conductive layer. It provides good image and touch clarity but is limited to single-touch use and requires a bare finger or capacitive stylus.

It is also sensitive to EMI/RFI interference but can be a cost-effective choice for many applications.

Resistive Touch

As a durable and cost-effective solution, resistive touch screens work by pressing two electrically resistive layers together.

While less sensitive and limited to single-touch, resistive touch can be used with gloved hands and withstands moisture and dust, making it popular in point-of-sale, medical, and industrial settings.

Infrared (IR) Touch

The original touch technology, IR, uses an array of invisible infrared light beams that detect touch when interrupted by a finger or stylus. IR touch screens offer long life, high accuracy, and preserve display clarity.

However, they are more expensive and sensitive to environmental factors like moisture and high ambient light.

Gorilla Glass is extremely thin, flat, and distortion-free, thanks to Corning’s unique fusion process, and offers excellent durability at a surprisingly affordable cost.

Dragontrail Glass

Produced by AGC, Inc., Dragontrail™ Glass offers a lightweight, flexible, and highly scratch-resistant alternative. Known for its strength and smooth finish, Dragontrail is widely used by major electronic brands and is ideal for devices requiring both durability and aesthetic appeal.

It is also environmentally friendly, as it is manufactured without lead, arsenic, or antimony.

Soda Lime Glass

For projects where premium glass isn’t necessary, soda lime (or window glass) provides a cost-effective solution. It is chemically stable, reasonably hard, and can be strengthened or tempered for extra durability.

Manufactured using the float process, soda lime glass is flat, smooth, and distortion-free, making it a practical choice for touchscreens or additional display protection.
